ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
ESL, English as a Second Language classes are held at 6:30pm on Friday evenings at Gretna United Methodist Church with instructors, Gary McMillen and Libby Rodriguez.
Gary is a very kind and effective teacher. His goal is to get you confident in your ability to converse in English. Gary has four years of experience, teaching English to the local Hispanic and Vietnamese community. Students who have taken ESL class with Gary attest to the level of confidence that they have while speaking English.
Libby is a certified ESL, retired teacher and public school administrator. Students will
enjoy her sweet spirit!
Class sizes range from 10-40 people. However, the program can accommodate more people! Above are some of the students who successfully completed the ESL class of 2018-2019.
Child care for Las Alitas students is available every Friday night. Sylvia Sanchez watches the children as they play games, work on puzzles, draw pictures and read Bible stories. The children love Sylvia and feel safe under her attentive care. On one Friday of each month the Gretna United Methodist Church hosts a children’s event called “Friends Following Faith on Friday” and children who’s parents are in the ESL class attend this fun evening of activities.
Gretna United Methodist Church is a place where anyone can feel at home. The mission of the church is “Connecting Diverse Communities to a Lifestyle Devoted to Jesus.” You, your children and everyone in your family is invited to join in any of the social activities that the church hosts each year such as: Ash Wednesday “drive-through” service, the Christmas party, Easter Egg Hunt, Blessing of the Pets, Jazz and Gospel on the Green and many other ministries intended to connect Christians in fun and fellowship.

Rev. Callie Winn Crawford has a heart and love for all people. She served for over forty years as a pastor in the Louisiana Annual Conference retiring in 2017. Rev. Callie believes that Jesus came to show God’s people how to live in peace with one another, how to give of ourselves for the greater good, how to receive power from God and how to love more fully. She will be serving Gretna UMC as the interim pastor until February 2020.
The ESL course lasts 9 months and costs $30.
